Swimming Merit Badge

Info:
Swimming is offered on Sunday's October-December. The class max is 45 scouts. Swimming consists of 6 classes (5 Pool & 1 Lecture Class)!

We give each scout their blue card back at the last class.

Suggestions:
Any scout can sign up for Swimming but should be able to pass the boy scout Swimmers Test (Jump feetfirst into water over the head in depth. Level off and swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be completed in one swim without stops and must include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating).

Some of the more difficult requirements for swimming are...
-Demonstrate survival skills by jumping feetfirst into deep water wearing clothes (shoes, socks, swim trunks, long pants, and long-sleeved shirt). Remove shoes and socks, inflate the shirt, and show that you can float using the shirt for support. Remove and inflate the pants for support. Swim 50 feet using the inflated pants for support.
-Swim continuously for 150 yards using the following strokes in good form and in a strong manner: front crawl for 25 yards, back crawl for 25 yards, sidestroke for 25 yards, breaststroke for 25 yards, and elementary backstroke for 50 yards.
-In water over your head use the feetfirst method of surface dive and headfirst surface dive (pike or tuck) bring an object up from the bottom. (8 feet)

We will have some time if a scout has trouble with some of the requirements to go back and practice and try again. If you need to improve on your swimming though we suggest that you take the learners class first!

Schedule:
10/13/13 - Reaching and Throwing Rescues
10/27/13 - Diving
11/10/13 - Dock Diving
11/24/13 - Clothes Inflation & Swimming

Webelos Aquanaut

Info:
Aquanaut is offered on one Sunday in November during the swimming merit badge class. The class max is 30 scouts. Aquanaut consists of 1 pool class!

If the class has been max out we might make another class during our lifesaving merit badge class in February.

The Webelo scout will work on their Aquanaut pin & Cub Scout Sports belt loop for Swimming. We give each Webelo a certificate at the completion of the class.

Suggestions:
Any scout can sign up for Aquanaut.

Some of the more difficult requirements for aquanaut are...
-Jump into water over your head. Come to the surface and swim 100 feet, at least half of this using a backstroke.
-Do a front surface dive and swim under water for four strokes before returning to the surface.

Since there is only one class if a scout has trouble with some of the requirements he can finish up the requirements in our learns program if you let us know a head of time.

Schedule:
11/24/13 - Swimming, Float, PFD, Dive, Rescue Methods, & Belt Loop (Swim Defense, Recreational Game, & Kick Board)

Lifesaving Merit Badge

Info:
Lifesaving is offered on Sunday's January-April. The class max is 35 scouts. Lifesaving consists of 7 classes (6 Pool & 1 Lecture Class)!

We give each scout their blue card back at the last class.

Suggestions:
Any scout can sign up for lifesaving but should having Swimming Merit Badge! Exceptions can be made depending on how strong of a swimmer they are.

Some of the more difficult requirements for lifesaving are...
-Swim continuously for 400 yards using each of the following strokes in a strong manner for at least 50 continuous yards: front crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke, and elementary backstroke.
-Recover a 10-pound weight in 8 to 10 feet of water using a feetfirst surface dive & a headfirst surface dive.
-Perform an equipment-based rescues for a conscious practice subject
-Perform nonequipment rescues for a conscious practice subject

We will have some time if a scout has trouble with some of the requirements to go back and practice and try again.

It very important to make all the classes for lifesaving. We practice every rescue several times before we do any of the tests. It is very hard to make up the requirements for lifesaving since it has a lot of requirements and it is an in depth merit badge.
